Chinese
Returned Scholars early 1900’s
Canadian
educational institutions have long attracted students
from China pursuing degrees and research opportunities
abroad. Many of these students who have journeyed back
from the West , continue to work and identify with
Canadian culture and business. Among the links
existing between Canada and China through public and
private sector initiatives, lies a unique
Chinese-initiated organization called the Chinese
Western Returned Scholars Association which maintains
a branch devoted specifically to returned academics
from Canada.
The
Chinese Western Returned Scholars Association (WRSA)
was founded in 1913 as a non-governmental organization
for Chinese scholars having returned from studying
overseas. The association aims to provide
members-through social activities and academic
exchanges-with an opportunity to share experiences and
knowledge of studying abroad. WRSA currently has more
than 8, 800 members who belong to country-specific
branches, Canada being one of the 12largest branches.
“The
Canada Branch was one of the original branches
created,” remarks Professor Alfred Peng,
director
of the Canada Branch. “As Canada was one of the
earliest countries to recognize the People’s
Republic of China, both countries have always had
strong relations.” Professor Peng, a former
assistant professor of architecture at the University
of Waterloo, has been involved in the Canada branch
for close to 15 years, Becoming it’s Director in
1991. He maintains that returned scholars from Canada
continue to have strong connection with the country,
many of whom go back and forth between Canada and
China pursuing business and academic endeavours.
The
Canada branch has over 300 members, all of whom have
spent at least two years studying in Canada. The
Branch holds social events for members every two to
three months, which include business seminars and
casual networking cocktails. In addition, members
receive regular copies of a “Study in Canada”
newsletter containing information on living and doing
business in Canada and personal profiles of current
and former student members.
